Background

Climate action and economic growth need not be competing priorities. As India advances towards its vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047 and its Net Zero commitment by 2070, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), which contribute nearly a third of the country’s GDP, 46% to exports and employ over 250 million people, have a critical role to play in this transition.

PCI India’s MSME Clean Tech Initiative demonstrates how this can work in practice by helping enterprises adopt cleaner production methods, improve resource efficiency and integrate low-carbon technologies that cut emissions while boosting productivity, reducing operating costs and building long-term competitiveness. By integrating technical expertise, on-ground implementation, facilitating access to Government schemes and strategic partnerships, the initiative helps MSMEs in building businesses that are not only environmentally sustainable but also economically resilient.

Scope of Intervention

Working at the intersection of climate action and enterprise development, PCI India partners with MSMEs to identify practical, context-specific pathways for decarbonisation. Our approach combines enterprise diagnostics, technical assistance, pilot demonstrations and ecosystem engagement to help businesses transition towards cleaner production systems that deliver measurable environmental and economic returns.

PCI India adopts a multi-pronged approach, including the adoption of energy-efficient clean technologies, renewable energy solutions, cleaner fuels, circular economy practices and improved occupational health and safety measures for the MSMEs.

Programme Lead and Collaborators 

We collaborate with Government, Industry Associations, Technical Institutions, Financial Partners and supply chain actors to improve access to technical knowledge, financing opportunities and implementation support. This systems approach helps address barriers that often prevent MSMEs from adopting sustainable technologies and practices at scale.

Cleaner production systems reduce energy consumption, lower fuel and electricity costs, minimise material waste and improve operational efficiency. These gains translate into stronger profitability, enhanced productivity and greater competitiveness, while simultaneously reducing emissions.

Outcome

Working with enterprises across sectors such as leather, brick kilns, food processing, textile, paper, PCI India is generating practical evidence on scalable pathways for industrial decarbonisation through energy assessments, cleaner production planning, technology demonstrations and capacity building. The lessons emerging from this work are informing models that can be adapted across industrial clusters and multiple geographies, supporting India’s broader green industrial transition and its journey towards Net Zero by 2070, while advancing the vision of an economically strong, environmentally sustainable Viksit Bharat.
