About the Project

PCI has been implementing a project supported by the Gates Foundation to design and test impactful interventions for women of reproductive age, increase uptake and adherence to IFA supplements in Bihar, and develop recommendations for delivering these strategies at scale. The project has various phases, i.e., user research and human-centred design (HCD) ideation, live prototyping and testing for implementation. The priority cohort for anaemia prevention and management is pregnant and lactating women. The foundation supports work to improve the fidelity of end-to-end management i.e., Screen, Refer, Treat and Track (SRTT) of moderate and severe anaemia in pregnant and lactating women (PLWs). The success of these workstreams depends on multiple consumer and provider behaviors. For example, on the consumer side, the success of the IFA regimen depends on timely identification of Anemia, getting regular services, repeated consumption of IFA tablets over 180 days for pregnant women, and repeated consumption of 180 IFA tablets over 6 months of exclusive breastfeeding for lactating women. On the provider side, the success of SRTT depends on the timely screening of all PWs without hoarding/defensive use of digital hemoglobinometers, identification of mild/moderate anaemia levels, proper counselling, referral, treatment and tracking for effective management of anaemia.

Complementary to parallel workstreams that aim to strengthen the health system for effective implementation of end-to-end anaemia management, this project is aimed at the following outcomes:

  1. Build on learnings from past analysis to deploy behaviourally informed interventions in Bihar to increase the SRTT continuum, IFA supplement consumption and adherence among PLWs. The interventions will be co-designed, tested and refined in consultation with the partner organizations and the State Health Society Bihar (SHSB).
  2. Understand the behavioral barriers across the SRTT pathway to develop behaviorally informed interventions to aid SRTT implementation in Bihar. This will be a series of qualitative enquiries into behavioral barriers across a set of consumer-provider touchpoints impacting screening, referral, treatment, and tracking.

Objectives

  • To support the effective rollout of field testing of prototypes by ensuring timely identification and recruitment of appropriate respondents across selected geographies.
  • To facilitate coordination with partner organizations, frontline workers (FLWs), and government officials to enable smooth implementation of field activities.
  • To conduct high-quality qualitative data collection (FGDs and IDIs) to assess user experience, comprehension, and behavioural response to the prototypes.
